Football: #2 Mount Union Finishes Strong with Shutout of Ohio Northern on Homecoming

ALLIANCE, Ohio - The No. 2-ranked Mount Union football team scored 28 second-half points in its 35-0 shutout over Ohio Northern on homecoming at Kehres Stadium on Saturday.

 

Mount Union (4-0, 3-0 OAC) outgained Ohio Northern (1-4, 1-3 OAC) 390-131 in total yards, including 227-75 on the ground.

 

Senior Braxton Plunk (Plant City, Fla./Plant City) connected with classmate Wayne Ruby (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan) on a 16-yard pass and catch for the first touchdown of the game with 1:22 left in the second quarter. Ruby is now tied with Cecil Shorts III with 63 career receiving touchdowns for most in program history.

 

Graduate student DeAndre Parker (Crystal River, Fla./Crystal River) extended the Purple Raiders' lead to 14-0 in the third quarter following a four-yard touchdown run, his first of three rushing scores on the day. Parker finished with 133 yards off 20 carries (6.6 avg.), for Parker's second 100-yard game of the season and 12th of his career.

 

Junior running back Tyler Echeverry (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) escaped Ohio Northern's defense on fourth down for a 33-yard touchdown run, his third touchdown of the season. Echeverry finished with 71 yards from 11 carries (6.5 avg.).

 

Parker scored the last two Mount touchdowns, from one yard and 20 yards out. Parker now has rushed for three touchdowns six different times in his career.

 

Senior Mason McMillen (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) led the Purple Raider defense with a game- and career-high 17 tackles, including a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. Senior Josh Jones (Twinsburg, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) and junior Rossy Moore (Lima, Ohio/Lima Central Catholic) each had a sack.

 

Senior quarterback Braxton Plunk (Plant City, Fla./Plant City) finished 17-of-27 for 163 yards and a touchdown. Junior Rayshaun Williams (Clearwater, Fla./East Lake) totaled a team-high 158 all-purpose yards, including 48 yards receiving off a team-high six catches (the all-purpose yards and receptions were a career high).

 

Freshman kicker Deaglan Camron (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot) made all of his five PATs, while his 38-yard field goal attempt was blocked.

 

The Raiders are back in action Saturday, Oct. 7 with a conference road game at Heidelberg with a 1:30 PM kickoff.
