Football: Ruby and the Purple Raiders Break School Records in 76-0 Win Over Capital

ALLIANCE, Ohio - The No. 2-ranked Mount Union football team won 76-0 over Capital for the program's largest margin of victory, while senior wide receiver Wayne Ruby (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan) broke the school record for career receiving touchdowns.

 

The margin of victory surpasses Mount's 77-3 victory over Capital in 2018 and its 84-14 win over Marietta in 2013.

 

Ruby now owns the triple crown of career school records for receivers - being first in receptions, yards, and now touchdowns.

 

Mount Union (6-0, 5-0 OAC) scored a touchdown on its first six drives and orchestrated scoring drives 11 of its 12 drives, not including the game's final drive when it was in victory formation. The Purple Raiders led 56-0 at halftime.

 

Junior Rayshaun Williams (Clearwater, Fla./East Lake) had a highlight-reel 71-punt return for a touchdown, the second of his career (73-yard return in 2021).

 

Junior Darnell Williams (Cleveland, Ohio/John Adams) ran for a game- and career-high 137 yards, the first 100-yard game of his career, including a pair of touchdowns - from 48 and 50 yards out.

 

Senior Braxton Plunk (Plant City, Fla./Plant City) finished a perfect 10 of 10 for 166 yards and three touchdowns, including Ruby's school-record 39-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter.

 

Freshman quarterback Jackson Akins (Phoenix, Ariz./Lake Gibson) threw a game- and career-high 174 yards and two touchdowns, including the first of his collegiate career. Senior Drew Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind./R. Nelson Snider) scored on a 24-yard touchdown snag, while senior Jose Brazoban (Fayetteville, N.C./Jack Britt) scored his first touchdown, a career-long 72-yard reception - the second longest receiving touchdown this season for the Raiders.

 

Junior Ryan Eiden (Shavertown, Pa./Lake-Lehman) added a 3-yard receiving touchdown, the first of his career.

 

Freshman kicker Deaglan Camron (Fort Myers, Florida/Bishop Verot) was a perfect 2 for 2 in field goals, including a career-long of 30, and 10 for 10 in points after touchdown.

 

Junior Tyler Echeverry (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) got the scoring started with a 2-yard rushing touchdown, now tied for a team-high six on the season.

 

The Purple Raiders outgained the Comets 669-66 in total offensive yards, 21 yards from tying 10th-most in program history.

 

Capital (1-5, 1-4 OAC) only got in Mount's territory twice, including a drive that started at Mount's 36 because of a turnover on downs.

 

Senior defensive lineman Duke Hill (Memphis, Tenn./Germantown) led the defense with two sacks and three tackles for loss. Senior linebacker Mason McMillen (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) registered a team-high nine tackles, including two tackles for loss and a half sack. The Raider defense had 11 total tackles for loss.

 

The Raiders are back in action Saturday, Oct. 21 with a road conference game at Wilmington. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
