Straight Win with Sweep of Baldwin Wallace

Union
baseball team (17-6, 10-0 OAC) completed a doubleheader sweep against Baldwin
Wallace
University
(15-10, 6-4 OAC) at Rafeld-Rogers Field. The Purple
Raiders are currently on a 13-game winning streak and are performing
exceptionally well.
In game one, Junior right-handed pitcher
Anthony Warner(Louisville,
Ohio
/ Louisville)
earned his third win of the season in his start, and he did not disappoint.
Warner pitched a strong 5.2 innings, allowing six hits and only one run while
recording three strikeouts.
The scoring for the Purple Raiders began
in the second inning with an RBI single to left field by sophomore outfielder
Luke Ickes (Green, Ohio / Green). In game one, Ickes went 2-for-3, contributing one RBI and a walk.
Following Ickes, sophomore outfielder Brycen Fox (Hamilton,
Ohio
/ Badin) also hit an RBI single, this time to right field, extending Mount
Union's
lead to 3-0. Fox had a strong performance as well, hitting safely in eight
consecutive games and finishing the game batting 2-for-5 with one RBI and a
stolen base.
In the seventh inning, the Purple Raiders
held a 3-1 lead when designated hitter Joe Lenart (Cleveland,
Ohio
/ Garfield Heights)
delivered a massive two-RBI single, extending their lead to 5-1. Lenart is known for coming through in crucial moments, and he certainly did that here.
Senior right-handed pitcher Chris Phillips
(Elyria,
Ohio
/ Elyria
Catholic pitched a dominant 3.1 innings out of the bullpen, earning his second
save of the season. Phillips only allowed two hits and did
not allow a run, securing the 5-1 victory.
In game two, left-handed pitcher Angel Mediavilla (Hialeah,
FL. / Imater Charter) had an outstanding start on the
mound, pitching 4.0 innings with two strikeouts and allowing only one run.
Junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Romito (North
Ridgeville, Ohio
/ North Ridgeville)
pitched 2.0 innings in relief, allowing two runs.
The Purple Raiders kicked off the scoring
early, tallying three runs in the first inning. Senior third baseman Chris Viamonte(Naples, FL. / Coral Gables) crossed home plate on
a wild pitch, followed by freshman catcher Daniel Thome
III (Lakewood, Ohio / St. Edwards) and senior first baseman Johnny Costella(Cleveland, Ohio / Trinity), who both scored by
drawing walks with runners in scoring position.
Senior shortstop Alex Stegman
(Berea,
Ohio
/ Berea-Midpark) stepped up in the bottom of the
fourth inning and hit an RBI single. In game two, Stegman
went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, marking his 17th hit in his last 10 games. He also
recorded his 19th and 20th RBIs.
Baldwin Wallace responded by scoring three
runs, but Stegman delivered again, hitting another RBI
single in the bottom of the sixth. Second baseman Andrew Witte (Mentor,
Ohio
/ Mentor
recorded an RBI walk, finishing the day 2-for-2 with three walks.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Chase Mayer
(Amherst,
Ohio
/ Amherst Steele) impressed in relief, pitching 3.0 innings with three
strikeouts, allowing no runs, and securing a 6-3 victory.

Union's
