Football: #2 Mount Union Clips Cardinals at Home

ALLIANCE, Ohio - The No. 2-ranked Mount Union football team won, 51-14, over Otterbein at home on Saturday.

 

Mount Union (8-0, 7-0 OAC) led 44-0 after three quarters. Otterbein (0-8, 0-7 OAC) scored its two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

 

Senior Wayne Ruby (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan) led all receivers with 120 yards and three touchdowns - his eighth career game with at least three touchdowns and third 100-yard game this season.

 

Senior Tyrell Sanders (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from classmate Braxton Plunk (Plant City, Fla./Plant City) on the Purple Raiders' opening drive.

 

On the Cardinals' ensuing drive, the Raider defense forced a three-and-out and sophomore Derek Blum (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) blocked the fourth-down punt which went through the back of the end zone for a safety.

 

Later in the first quarter, sophomore Nick Turner (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown - the first of his collegiate career.

 

Sophomore tight end Wyatt Stiehl (Tampa, Fla./East Lake) started the second-quarter scoring with a four-yard touchdown grab for his first collegiate score.

 

Ruby scored the next three touchdowns (from 36, 23, and 41 yards out).

 

Senior wide receiver Noah Mangan (Avon, Ohio/Avon) caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from freshman Jackson Akins (Phoenix, Ariz./Lake Gibson (FL)), Mangan's first touchdown of his collegiate career. On the same drive, Mangan caught a 15-yard pass on third down for his first career catch as a Raider.

 

Plunk finished 26 of 34 with 330 yards and season-high five touchdowns. Junior running back Darnell Williams (Cleveland, Ohio/John Adams) led on the ground with 53 yards from 12 carries.

 

Senior linebacker Mason McMillen (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) added to his team-leading tackle total with a team-best seven on Saturday, to go along with a forced fumble and a break up. Junior defensive lineman Von Factor (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) registered a sack, while junior linebacker Marcus Jackson (Dallas, Tex./Richardson) and senior Ian Sexton (Dover, Ohio/Dover) each had a half sack.

 

The Purple Raiders will travel to No. 8 John Carroll with at least the share of the OAC Title on the line. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
